Back on the horse, need a new job | smebro's Blog

So I went to the hour long readers/writers thingy at the Aotea centre, it turned out to have nothing at all to do with fiction writing…but was purely about poetry and physics…so not quite the sc-fi fodder I was hoping for. Afterwards Glen and I went to the bookstore café and I complained about my current job. It might have been annoying, I’m not sure…but I do need a change…preferably as far from telemarketing as I can get. I’ve proven to myself that as a job, it’s pretty simple (and a reliable fallback)…so now I need to do something else that allows me time to pursue my personal interests. I’m only twenty, too young to decide if I want to work for Telecom forever…and young enough to know I don’t want to. I did manage a patchy writing session last night, I suppose it was a good thing my flatmate went to bed early (with agonising toothache) so that I could turn off the TV and focus on the words…it might have been average work, but at least it’s something. Had to have been more than 500 words, that’s too little…but it’s a start at getting through the darned block. It might have helped that I spent time reading writer’s magazine, and it suggested a way to get past my problem of long boring conversation (which I’ve since called what it really was…procrastination), how did I overcome the pointless exchange ? I had a man enter the room with a gun…well not precisely (and attack by protagonists mother), but I did use that tool to progress them out of that talk quickly and into a small action sequence. When I get around to editing, that conversation will lose a lot of the needless fat… I can’t wait for editing…that will mean I’ve finished. Another symptom of telemarketing, in my opinion, is a short attention span. Once you get used to focusing on either people or information in small 5 minute block it becomes harder to focus on any task for a decent working period. I write a few words and feel the urge to look away (to call someone?) even as I type this I’ve made about 3 or 4 calls. Ideally, Id like a job that requires very little random-access-memory, a job where I can spend the day dreaming up situations for my characters…a job where I have plenty of inspiration, So at the moment it looks like I’ll be applying for jobs and the library or at bookstores… sales in retail…but that’s still better then this as far as my needs go (I need money, and I need free time) does anyone else have any good ideas? Today I will cut back on my activity again…from now on I won’t allow more than 2 hours of my workday on this site…I love it here too much.
